Mother-to-be Jiang Ling is also the genius behind the avant-garde brand May J., known as one of the premier menswear brands from Mainland China. Franca Sozzani of Vogue Italia once speculated that Jiang Ling may be one of the next great knitwear designers, and I can understand why… When I first saw her designs in October 2009, I knew I was witnessing the beginning (it was her first show) of something very, very special. She has created a signature spiky knit that looks a bit rough and even sharp but is actually soft to the touch. Her signature knit sweaters and scarves give great effect while also affording the wearer comfort. I’m also in love with her jackets, which are seemingly simple but often quite intricate (it’s all in the details)… My favorites would have to be the jackets that are cut asymmetrically, but it’s a tossup between those and the ones with funky, quirky patterns. I’ll post some of those pictures later.
Anyway, she just opened her first store yesterday in Xintiandi Style near Uma Wang‘s store. If you’re in Shanghai and want to check out the store and support a great local talent, the address is 245 Madang Lu near Fuxing Lu, 2F. If you’re not in Shanghai, you can take a look at a few pictures I took, but my photos don’t do the store or brand justice… So go and check it out when you’re on the Mainland!
