2016 was the best year for the Chinese fashion industry yet, so let’s jump right in and see why :
OPENING CEREMONY’S 中国年 YEAR OF CHINA
The purveyors of cool, Opening Ceremony, finally launched their Year of China in 2016!! Founded in 2002, the US retailer started by importing products from Hong Kong and selling them in New York… They’ve waited ages to go back to their roots, and in 2016 Opening Ceremony did just that!! They selected a range of talented Chinese designers to sell through their doors in New York, LA, and Japan, as well as their online shop.

Labelhood is quickly becoming China’s most compelling platform for designers to showcase their work. Only in its second season, it has blossomed seemingly overnight, and boasted an impressive roster that included FFIXXED, Hiuman, Staffonly, Chen Peng, Pronounce, Xu Zhi, and Yirantian.
Set in the far-off reaches near Hongqiao Airport, Coda Showroom was a destination well-worth the trip. Not only did it feature amazing brands like The Lawn, Percy Lau, and Heng Shu, but they also created a more holistic vision of what fashion is and can be by curating an exhibition based on Dieter Ram’s 10 Principles of Good Design.

FASHION NOW 聚焦 FOCUSES
Fashion Now has been known for having the most tightly curated event in China, showing only 4 to 6 designers per season.
Victoria’s Secret acknowledged the influence of Chinese consumers by not only including more Chinese models but by also including Chinese motifs in its fashion show extravaganza… but the brand took a lot of heat for being “racist” and superficial, but what could be more Chinese than a dragon?!
Chris Chang and her brand Poesia have long been known for mesmerizing textures and vibrant colors, but in 2016 her collaboration with MAC served up some very pigmented realness. Oh ya, and she made history by becoming the first Chinese fashion designer to collaborate with the storied makeup brand.
A photographer known for his nudes is hardly the first person you’d expect a clothing brand to turn to, but Ren Hang’s lens has given us a new vision for two of the most compelling brands in China : Yat Pit and Atelier Rouge Pékin.
IS CHINA’S MOST STYLISH MAN
Chinese Olympic swimmer Ning Zetao is probably more recognizable in a Speedo than he is in a tux, but have no doubts about it : the guy has SWAG. He’s been featured in magazines like GQ, Elle Men, and Numéro, but it really doesn’t matter if he’s in the glossys, on the pool deck, or on the street… he always stylin’.
OLD CHINESE PEOPLE 证明他们比你酷 PROVE THEY’RE COOLER THAN YOU
We’ve always had a hunch that old people are the best-dressed demographic in China, but these senior citizens proved it in 2016. From amateur designers to amateur models, they can and have done it all… They have become viral sensations and prove that style improves with time.
SISTER TOMATO 呈献杂货铺真相 SERVES UP GROCERY STORE REALNESS
Sister Tomato nearly shut down the grocery store and the internet with her barely-there thong and thigh-high boots. Sister Tomato is a stripper, but apparently she feels like the streets are just an extension of the nightclub because she dons the same outfits no matter where she is or what she’s doing. Follow her Weibo for more outrageous pics and outfits.

ALIBABA 在双十一卖了一些东西 SOLD SOME STUFF ON 11⁄11
OK, so they sold like 17.3 billion (US) dollars worth of stuff, but that’s pretty good considering it’s just one day. They sold 14.3 billion in 2015 and 9.3 billion in 2014. To put that into perspective, Facebook’s YEARLY revenue for 2015 was just shy of 18 billion US dollars.
WINS RIGHTS TO HIS OWN NAME
This sounds like a joke, but it definitely isn’t… in a highly unusual move, China’s Supreme People’s Court ruled in favor of Michael Jordan in a case against Qiaodan Sports, which had used the former basketball legend’s name and image to sell product.
NIKELAB X RICCARDO TISCI 发布会 LAUNCH
